Bird Banding!

May 18, 2015 - 11:19am -- karenp

We went bird banding on May 7th, and this is what some of us thought about our adventure!

Arlo

Bird banding was amazing, watching them band all 6 birds. I want to volunteer when I get older. In the beginning we caught a House Wren and a Dusky Fly Catcher. At first I couldn’t tell them apart, but then I got it. After playing for a minute or two we caught a Downy Wood Pecker which was awesome! A little later we caught 2 Red Winged Black Birds and another magnificent House Wren! I got to have a Red Winged Black Bird clamp on to my finger. I released the other red wing. Since I was so in to it I got to release the 2nd House Wren, and my friend Eric had it jump on his arm! Bird banding was wonderful!

On May 7th Mrs. Palazzolo’s class went bird banding. We caught 2 House Wrens, 2 Red Winged Black Birds, and we also caught a Downy Wood Pecker. Greatest field trip ever! When the bus arrived we walked down the trail and we saw Heidi the bird bander setting up a net. Heidi held the birds up close so we could see them up close. Heidi also had an assistant to help her. When we catch the bird we put them in a warm bag to keep them calm. Six or seven students held out one of their fingers and one of the bird banding people would set the bird onto our fingers and if you were still enough the bird would stay on your finger for a second but usually the bird will fly away pretty fast.

My favorite highlights from bird banding were watching the Wood Pecker peck Ms. Heidi’s hand! It was funny watching her go “Ouch! Ouch! Ouch” Every time! Also, I loved letting them go, and watch them fly from our hand after a few seconds. Another fun highlights was when I saw Mrs. Heidi & Jessica take out the Dusky Fly Catcher from its bag, and watch it poop on Mrs. Heidi’s hand! I also loved the way Ms. Jessica weighed the Dusky Fly Catcher, it was funny and eye popping! I also found it fun when the little birds (besides the Wood Pecker) would swarm around in the little bag we would put them in, they were restless! I had a great time at Bird Banding!

The Mysterious Bird of Black and White

April 23, 2015 - 1:11pm -- karenp

We set out to look for beautiful birds at  the dusk of dawn, as we approached the doors we saw nothing! Thinking that it would be a boring day, we were right until...

BOOM! Out of nowhere came a beautiful bird of black and white! A WHITE CROWNED SPARROW! We've never seen such a thing in the history of birding!!!

The Mysterious Feathers

March 17, 2015 - 3:12pm -- karenp

This time we went a different way. Not to the bird feeder. We waked around outside. We spotted a pile of feathers. We think something ate it or it hit something. We also think it might of lost some of its feathers. The long feathers were gray, and the small under feathers were white. We think it might be a Quail or a Dove.
