Gorgeous day for birding

March 31, 2016 - 8:25am -- karenp

Boy, we picked the perfect day to observe our feeders! It was sunny, warm, and spring-like. The Lesser Goldfinch males' colors have gotten much brighter. We did not see our usual large amount of California Quail, but we think they might be pairing off for the summer and not in large groups any more. We have several morning doves that like to rest under the bushes in the corner of the outdoor classroom. The kids enjoy them because they will often just sit and look at us if we are quiet as we go by. After birding, we read our library books in the sunshine as an end-of-day treat!

Myriad and colorful!

February 29, 2016 - 8:54am -- karenp

During last Thursday's birding, we observed a wonderful variety of birds, including: Dark-eyed Junco, Mourning Dove, House Finch, California Quail, House Sparrow, Lesser Goldfinch, and American Goldfinch. This was our first sighting of lessers, so back in the classroom, we looked online and compared lessers to Americans. The two Mourning Dove actually sat under a tree for a minute after a couple of students noticed them, then flew into a nearby tree, giving all kids a chance to see them up close. We noticed that the birds' colors are getting more noticeable, especially the pinkish red of the House Finch. It was a beautiful day to bird!

Goose flyover

January 26, 2016 - 8:02am -- karenp

On our last trip to the feeders, we had the good luck to have two separate flocks of Canada Geese fly right over our heads. The kids had to count fast! We counted 63 geese as they went over. We also had tons of birds at our feeders---almost 30 California Quail, which are so fun to watch. Great birding!

Birds through the glass.

December 11, 2015 - 2:03pm -- karenp

Our class saw many birds through the glass because they could not see us. We saw at least twenty birds sitting on the feeders and on the ground. They were easy to see with the binoculars. It was like a entire city of birds! It was really cool.-Jacob Meyer Mrs. Palazzolos.
