Spring Break Birding

March 20, 2015 - 4:04pm -- michelleaxtell

We cleaned up the classroom and filled the feeders. We will look forward to seeing how much birdseed is used while we are gone next week.  We predict more birds will visit when less people are around.  The class is also going to concentrate on spotting birds wherever they are during the vacation.  Maybe we'll have some exotic sightings!

A Flock of Guests

March 16, 2015 - 4:33pm -- michelleaxtell

Last week was an exciting time for students to learn and share through the Bird by Bird program.  First, we had a wonderful visit with Slim, the Golden Eagle, and her handler Monte.  The students were intent on knowing as much as possible about Slim and her counterparts in the wild.  A few days later, our school hosted a SLAM night (Science, Language, Math and Art Night).  Of course, our Science activity was bird watching!  The students showed their families our identification and recording materials.  Then, they shared their field glasses with parents and siblings.  The families were truly impressed at the students' awareness of native birds.  Thanks to great weather, participants were able to see mourning doves, kestrels, geese, ducks, gulls, finches, and sparrows.

House Finch Takes Over

March 6, 2015 - 8:39pm -- michelleaxtell

We had quite a bit of activity at the feeder this week.  The sunflower seeds have remained untouched.  But, a certain house finch took over the other feeder.  He guarded it vigorously, even standing up to a dove one day.  He seems to have eaten most of the seeds.

Where are they?

February 26, 2015 - 4:16pm -- michelleaxtell

Our feeders are full because not many birds have been visiting this week.  This morning our bird watchers saw four dark birds on a wire in the distance, but had a hard time identifying them.  We hope to spot more birds next week!
