Star River Walk

May 22, 2015 - 3:34pm -- michelleaxtell

Mr. Stevens facilitated a fantastic walking field trip to the Star River Walk.  If you haven't visited the area yet, we highly recommend checking out the beautiful, lightly traveled trails at Star Road and the Boise River.  Students learned about native and invasive plant species.  They helped reinforce habitats for the birds living along the river.  We saw a record number of birds out in the lovely spring weather.  It was a cloudy 73 degrees with no rain.  Most excting was the sighting of a Blue Heron which we have not seen near the school.  The class was also excited to tally up:  Mallards, Starlings, Robins, Blackbirds, Geese, Quail, House finches, Mourning doves, and Black-capped chickadees.  What a wonderful way to wrap up our BBB year!

Bird City

April 21, 2015 - 3:43pm -- michelleaxtell

This afternoon we noticed many birds at our feeder all at once. One student exclaimed, "It was like bird city!".  There was also a Starling peeking out of one of our Kestrel nest boxes.  We have to climb up this week and see if there is a nest inside.

No Fooling

April 2, 2015 - 2:01pm -- michelleaxtell

On April 1st, the class shared a variety of birds spotted during spring break.  Here's the list:

Golden and Bald eagles, hummingbirds, House sparrows, Ospreys, ducks, Kestrel, Ravens, geese, blackbirds, starlings, Red-tailed hawks, robins, gulls, crows,  grebes, black-capped chickadees and flickers.  One student was also excited to announce that the trails at Camelsback Park are named after birds.

Spring Break Birding

March 20, 2015 - 4:04pm -- michelleaxtell

We cleaned up the classroom and filled the feeders. We will look forward to seeing how much birdseed is used while we are gone next week.  We predict more birds will visit when less people are around.  The class is also going to concentrate on spotting birds wherever they are during the vacation.  Maybe we'll have some exotic sightings!
