Birds of Star

October 27, 2015 - 3:37pm -- michelleaxtell

Today Mr. Willadsen presented information about six common birds we might see in our area.  The students learned about the specific field markings, behaviors, and calls of each species.  We shared our recent experiences with bird watching, both at school and outside of school.  The students made excellent diagrams and notes about their favorite birds.

Time to Fall in Love With Birding

October 4, 2015 - 7:55pm -- michelleaxtell

Fall is an exciting time to watch the migrating birds. The feeders are ready and waiting.  Our facilitator, Eric Willadsen, visited last Wednesday to help make sure our classroom is ready.  The students learned about key features to look for when identifying birds.  Eric also taught us a migration game and coordinated binocular practice for each child.  I anticipate another great year of birding!

Star River Walk

May 22, 2015 - 3:34pm -- michelleaxtell

Mr. Stevens facilitated a fantastic walking field trip to the Star River Walk.  If you haven't visited the area yet, we highly recommend checking out the beautiful, lightly traveled trails at Star Road and the Boise River.  Students learned about native and invasive plant species.  They helped reinforce habitats for the birds living along the river.  We saw a record number of birds out in the lovely spring weather.  It was a cloudy 73 degrees with no rain.  Most excting was the sighting of a Blue Heron which we have not seen near the school.  The class was also excited to tally up:  Mallards, Starlings, Robins, Blackbirds, Geese, Quail, House finches, Mourning doves, and Black-capped chickadees.  What a wonderful way to wrap up our BBB year!

Bird City

April 21, 2015 - 3:43pm -- michelleaxtell

This afternoon we noticed many birds at our feeder all at once. One student exclaimed, "It was like bird city!".  There was also a Starling peeking out of one of our Kestrel nest boxes.  We have to climb up this week and see if there is a nest inside.
