Bird fireworks

December 7, 2016 - 10:31am -- michelleaxtell

Mr. Willadsen came to help us make bird feeders last week.He helped us put Crisco and pinecones and birdseeds on it . Many kids saw birds on the feeders when they hung them up. We saw 50 House sparrows that lit the sky like fireworks! We also found a Goldfinch.

Owl Pellet & Feather Fun

November 18, 2016 - 5:24pm -- michelleaxtell

My students enjoyed dissecting an owl pellet that I found in the mountains. I prepped it by baking it before bringing it to class. Then, using the document camera, we worked together to find and identify the bones. We decided that the owl had recently eaten two field mice. The bones have been a popular and fascinating attraction all week! Also this week, Mr.Willadsen visited with a great feather experiment. Students tested the temperature of ice on their skin with no protection, with feathers as a barrier, and finally with feathers and air. This brought home the concept of fluffed up feathers as insulation. It was perfect timing, given the cold and blustery day!

Flock of Finches

November 3, 2016 - 2:20pm -- michelleaxtell

We've been enjoying a small flock of House Finches outside our door. They stay in the bushes across the canal until the students are inside. Then, they swarm our feeders. Fortunately, we have windows, so we've had great opportunities to count them and observe their markings. They sure are fiesty when it comes to guarding the food supply!

Heron Visit

October 19, 2016 - 12:32pm -- michelleaxtell

Today we saw a Great Blue Heron perched on a pole across the canal from our classroom. It sat for a long time, looking into the canal. Maybe it was looking for food. Finally, it flew away. Luckily, we got a few pictures.
