What's New

Spring Birding

April 30, 2018 - 2:34pm -- michelleaxtell

We've been seeing a lot more birds with the warmer weather. It's been fun to watch the mating pairs of ducks in the canal work to find safe places for their nests. There is a barn cat nearby that stalks around and makes it seem dangerous to lay eggs there. We've also been watching a Mourning Dove nest with two small white eggs in it. We are looking forward to seeing them all hatch. Our Kestrel boxes don't have any signs of activity yet. We hope that some Kestrels return to nest here soon.

February and March are Flying By

March 19, 2018 - 4:49pm -- michelleaxtell

February flew by without quite as many sightings. However, we conducted a great science experiment to see how bird feathers trap air to help keep birds warm in the winter. Now, with the warmer weather, we are noticing more birds visiting our feeder. When Mr. Willadsen came last week, we got to dissect owl pellets. It was so cool and we discovered many bones from rodents and small birds.

Birds of Winter

January 30, 2018 - 2:25pm -- michelleaxtell

Mr. Willadsen was here to teach us about birds we might see more often during the winter in our area. We also had the opportunity to go bird-watching. We're getting better at taking our time and moving slowly and quietly. We are becoming better observers. We learned that scientists have to pay attention to details, and we practiced sketching the birds we learned about.

January 19, 2018 - 4:44pm -- michelleaxtell

We had an opportunity to learn about migration with Mr. Willadsen. He taught us how to play a game in which we learned that some animals migrate in a different direction than you might think. They migrate toward their food in order to survive. Also, birds can run into obstacles when migrating, such as predators, pollution, weather, power lines, and airplanes.
