Owl Visit!

October 25, 2017 - 2:27pm -- Joni Brooks

Riverside Firsties were visited by Ms. Vicky!  She brought a friend, the MK Nature Center's Burrowing Owl, Hoots!  The kids really loved seeing the bird and wrote an opinion piece of why they thought the Burrowing Owl was or wasn't the best owl.  I will use this as part of their writing evidence to support our new report card!   Also, our Donor's Choose Project was funded in 10 minutes!  We now have a class set of the little green "Idaho Birds" books!  My students look at them all the time and we have many activities where they use the books!  We also went on our first greenbelt river walk.  It was a short walk, but we saw Gold Finches, House Finches, House Sparrows, a Mallard Duck, and we heard a Belted King Fisher.  What a great birding month!

Bird Banding!

September 15, 2017 - 8:08am -- Joni Brooks

RIverside 1st graders had a great time bird banding!  We caught: 2 white crowned sparrows, 1 warbling vireo, and 1 yellow warbler.  The kids were very excited and this field trip really "kick started" our birding! Only one wasp sting, one lost water bottle, one fall, 42 goat heads removed, 4 birds banded, 21 happy first graders, and one tired teacher!  Thanks Ms. Heidi for the great experience!

Riverside has been up and birding!!

September 2, 2017 - 7:48pm -- Joni Brooks

The 1st graders are so exctied to learn more about birds.  We've only seen on female Mallard at our ground feeder and a squirrel draining seed feeder!  We will soon go on our first field trip to band some birds.  We took our pretest and we are now learning what exactly is a bird??  We will start our interactive bird notebooks on Tuesday.  Looking forward to another great year of birding with kids!

Kathryn Albertson's Field Trip

May 17, 2017 - 2:10pm -- Joni Brooks

Brrrr! It was cold, but the rain held off!  We saw more than 15 different types of birds and learned some new bird facts from Ms. Ware!  We played Migration games, made our name out of nature, and played Birdie Bingo.  We are graphing the birds we saw and each learned something new today!  Great day for birding!
