Birds of Prey Center!

February 28, 2018 - 4:22pm -- Joni Brooks

1st graders at Riverside Elementary had a fantastic time learning about California Condors and Peregrine Falcons.   Students were so excited to see both of these birds when visiting the Birds of Prey Center this month.  We also had a special treat when Ms. Deniz came to help up dissect Owl Pellets!  The kids LOVED this activity.  We have been more consistent with recording our daily feeder observations and continue to love to learn about birds!

Great Blue Herons!

January 25, 2018 - 2:32pm -- Joni Brooks

Riverside 1st graders took a bird walk on the greenbelt today!  They were very excited to see the Great Blue Heron Nests!  The herons were flying to and from the river, and you could see them nesting!  Very fun!  We have been working on learning different heights of birds and measuring them with base ten blocks!  We love birding!

1st Grade Bird Walk! ...(Late Post)

December 28, 2017 - 10:02pm -- Joni Brooks

Riverside first graders took a bird walk on the greenbelt on Dec. 20th!  It was COLD, but the students were so excited to get out of the classroom and look for birds.  We received more pairs of binoculars and everyone had a pair to observe birds! Thanks Ms. D.!!  We heard a Belted Kingfisher and then saw him!  We walked down to see the Mute Swans.  Students recognized geese, ducks, and song birds.  I was excited when they didn't know a specific bird they were happy to try and find it in their Idaho Field Guides.  We identified every bird we saw!

We have also made a connection with a 6th grade class at Riverside.  Their classroom windows face our feeders.  The teacher came to me asking questions about the little yellow birds they were seeing and her students were interested in learning about the birds on the feeders.  We now have 6th grade BIRD BUDDIES!!!  The first graders learn about a bird all week long, then when we have our bird buddy time, we teach our 6th grader.. This is such a fun time, and I love sharing our bird knowledge with our school community!  Hooray for birding!

Bird Art!

November 30, 2017 - 12:13pm -- Joni Brooks

We have been working hard to identify field markings on different birds.  We decided to make Black-Capped Chickadees for our hallway art project and they turned out so cute!  I was happy to see students looking into their bird field guides to look up close at the field marks and draw them into their drawing!  We are looking forward to a cold greenbelt walk soon and started our bird reports!  Such a fun birding month.
