Second Annual Kuna High School Bird Festival

May 9, 2017 - 10:13am -- adale

Friday May 5th the first graders from Crimson Point Elementary came over the the high school for the second annual bird festival. The ornithology classes put the festival on, student groups of 3 or 4 took first grade students through games that were fun but also taught a lot about birds. We also had two falconers join us with their birds, a kestrel and prairie falcon. As you can see from the photos the falcons were a big hit. The festival went very well and I am very proud of all my students.

Birds of Prey Field Trip

April 17, 2017 - 3:18pm -- adale

Last Thursday and Friday we had two great field trips to the Morley Nelson Birds of Prey Area. We saw a lot of raptors and even got to see four badgers. The students had a great time seeing the birds that we have been talking about and looking at pictures of. It was really nice to see them in the flesh rather than on the screen. We saw; Swainson's Hawks, a nest of Red tailed Hawks, Northern Harriers, Prairie Falcons, Burrowing Owls, and a lot of smaller birds. Now we are getting ready for the second annual Kuna Wild About Birds Festival. The two ornithology classes at Kuna will host the first grade classes from Crimson Point Elemenary.

Numbers have really gone down

April 6, 2017 - 10:16am -- adale

We have been noticing the bird numbers as well as variety has really gone down lately. We had a lot of house finches around all winter but now it is rare to see one at the feeder. Monte Tish came out with Slim to talk to the students before spring break and once again blew everyone away. The second day he was here Slim was vocalizing a lot. That made me just a little nervous because when she did it the first time Monte said she usually starts "clucking" the a chicken a lot right before she lays an egg. When she lays and egg he has to get it away from her because all she will do is try to incubate it. Since it isn't fertilized it will start to rot. Yesterday, April 5, we took a walk around the neighborhood by the school and saw our first Brewers Blackbird back from its migration. It worked out really because it was perched within a couple of feet from a Red Winged Blackbird so everyone was able to see the difference and similarities between the two. It was a great teachable moment. We finished up our walk going right by an active Red-Tailed Hawk nest just a block from the school.

It's a great time to be a birder

January 28, 2017 - 9:24pm -- adale

A new semester and a brand new batch of potential birders. Once again I can't help but sing the praises of the Bird by Bird program. The feeders, binoculars, and spotting scopes make it so much easier for our kids to learn about birds. The feeders are set up by the front doors and they are being used like crazy. Each day for class we can either start out with a little field trip or I can talk a little bit about the tips of identifying birds and we can head out to the feeder and the kids can see what I was just talking about by viewing the birds on the feeders and on the ground around the feeders. We use the most common visitor at the feeders, the house sparrow and house finch to learn about field marks and how they can be used to identify birds. It is so nice to have all of the models right there. We don't have to worry about finding something to look at with the feeders so close.
