Recently Monte Tish came to our classroom recently with Slim. He is always a big hit even though he says just Slim makes the show. I always like the way that he walks around the room with Slim on his arm so kids can get a real close up look at a bird as big and majestic as Slim is. When I have a guest speaker come to my class I always do something to thank the speakers but since it is a high school classroom I don't have the students write thank you notes. That's just for the elementary level classes right? This time I decided to go against what I think is the tradition or age appropriate thing for students to do. I had each ornithology class write Monte a thank you note and I was blown away with the outcome. Without exception all of the kids told Monte how cool it was and how much they appreciate what he does and some even told him they were interested in helping him. One letter though really blew me away. I really wanted to share this one letter so I am going to type it here but I am leaving the students name out.
It was such an honor to meet you and Slim. My mind was blown for the entire day afterwords. I know this must seem very elementery school of me, but a letter is the best way I think I could thank you. You peaked my interst in bird rehabilitation and nearly made me cry a couple of times. That was probably one of my best days in high school. I've gained a new respect and love for birds in this class and your visit cemented that. So once again, thank you for that amazing 90 minutes of my life.
Wow! The day that Monte came was a big impact on this kid and I do believe that. On a grander scale though the Bird by Bird has had a huge impact on his life. I know that so many kids are having their lives changed by birds and they may not even know it yet. It is the time of year to be thankful and I say without apology and on my kids behalf that I am thankful for the Bird by Bird program. I could not have done this on my own.
