A lot of Birding going on!

I apologize for the lateness of my class post.  

We have been very busy learning more and more about birds this year. Here is a log of our activities from this year, so far.

September 30th - Today we met Miss Mia. She was so much fun and we had a blast learning bird parts and singing Crown, Wings, Eyes and Beaks (to the tune of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes). We labeled birds parts and took many breaks to practice this new song. Miss Mia was kind enough to deliver our Bird by Bird equipment that Mrs. Podolsky and Mr. Aumiller set up!

October 14th - Field Trip to the Boise River with Idaho Bird Observatory! Today we observed mist nets and we were able to see a house finch get banded. We were all amazed at how light a bird band feels. Everyone had fun playing Habitat Match. Some friends were very enthousiastic at dying when their habitats did not match. What a fun way to stress the importance of having shelter, water, and food. This had come in very handy when discussing wants and needs with the class!

October 21st - Miss Mia joined Mr. Aumiller and Mrs. Podolsky while the rest of the class was in Music. Miss Mia made it into the building just in time! Unfortunately we were unable to play Bird Bingo with Miss Mia, but she was kind enough to leave it for us. We played the game on October 28th.

October 28th - Bird Bingo and Is a Bat a Bird? Students helped make a T-Chart that demonstrated things all birds have on one side. We filled in the opposite side after reading Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats and listed everything that makes a bat a bat. 12 students originally thought that a bat was type of bird, by the end of the day everyone knew that a bat is a mammal and not a bird! 

Again, I apologize for not getting this post in sooner. We have been very busy in our room and enjoy our recess time observing the bird feeders. We are trying encourage other students to ignore the neighborhood cat that likes to stalk our bird feeders.

Bird by Bird Poems

For the month of May, my students were asked to become an expert on a bird of their choice. They went home and learned all they could about their bird with their families help. When they came in to school on May 9th, as experts and with a graphic organizer ready, we began our poetry unit. Students learned about Color Poems, 5 Senses Poems, Acrostic Poems, Haikus, Cinquains, and Free Verse Poems. They wrote a poem about their bird using each kind of poem, then shared all of their poems with a small group. We then thought about which poem best captured our bird and what we would like other people to know or learn about our bird from our poem. We also thought about which poem was their favorite and what made it their favorite. Students then made a final draft, that I would type up, and drew a picture of their bird. 

After I typed up their poems, we practiced reading and rereading their poem in a small group. Students then presented their bird poem in small groups to a 3rd grade class at our school that just finished a Birds of Prey unit. It was amazing to watch and listen as the 3rd graders learned more about birds, and watched as my proud 1st graders read their poems. It was a great experience and everyone was engaged and listening!

I then collected each student's final copy of their poem and their picture and created a class Bird by Bird Poetry Book. I made a copy for each student, and bound it into a class book. They were very excited to take them home and share our class book with their family!

Thank you Bird by Bird for helping me to expand my teaching to incorporate Science and Writing in a unique way that I might not have thought of previously. I am very proud of the hard work my students put into their writing.

Parts of a Bird and Bird Names

Miss Barb prepared the class for a lesson on bird parts and how bird parts are used to name some birds. Our first task was to label a bird using correct names and vocabulary. Miss Barb discussed how each part is used and what to look for when identifying different birds or male and females of a species. 

For the conclusion of the lesson students were given pictrues of birds and asked to name them given the distinctive coloration markings and their placement on the birds body. It was fun to listen to all the different names that they came up with, and seeing how many names they knew. 

The last slide was of a Yellow-rumped Warbler, and they all yelled out, "Butter-Butt!" I believe this is the class favorite! What an impression our bird banding field trip has left on these young birders.

The Great Migration - Watch Out for Cats!

February 3, 2016 - 11:04am -- mirandap

Mrs. Barb came in to class on January 22nd, and presented all about migration. Students were able to understand that birds migrate to follow food, and for better weather. These little birders were very impressed to learn about the Arctic Tern that travels 13,000 miles! Students were also able to relate our beginning of the year field trip to the importance of migration by discussing how Heidi blew on the bellies of all the birds to check how much fat they had for their journey. 

While playing The Great Migration Challenge, students enjoyed being banded and traveling around our room learning about different obsticles that birds face while migrating. 

We didn't have a whole lot of time to review the game, so Mrs. Barb was nice enough to let us keep it for a little while. We played the game again the following week after trying to monitor our bird feeders. When we discussed the many different obsticles students were so excited to share if they made it to the end, or if they died. Many students were caught by cats and that made them feel frustrated. They said that they were going to make sure that their cats never went outside! 

When it came to monitoring our bird feeder for our monthly bird  count, we were so disappointed to see only 3 House Sparrows hiding in a bush near the feeders. We decided that birds must not like braving cold, windy, rainy days!
