Anser Charter School

Anser Charter School Kindergarten has a tradition of taking children on a in-depth year-long study of birds. Because Boise and its surroundings are home to songbirds, water birds, and birds of prey it makes for a perfect location to journey into the world of birds and develop a passion for learning.

Children have a lot of prior knowledge about birds and are immersed in a world where they can see birds every day.  This accessibility makes birds a great tool to use while teaching children about the natural world, the fragile existence of wildlife, and the need to become caretakers of all living things.

At Anser Kindergarten, children have close-up encounters with birds that excite their senses and engage their minds. They have the opportunities to view birds close up, touch and hold birds. Live birds come into the classroom and/or we go to homes where owners will share their knowledge of and passion for birds. Children learn to use binoculars to view birds in our immediate environment along the river, at the bird feeders outside our classroom windows, and in their own backyards.

Working with Bird by Bird has been an excellent extension to our curriculum. We are learning more about how to collect data in a kindergarten age appropriate and authentic way. We are learning how to care for our bird habitat and how to educate others about the birds we love.

In classrooms at Anser we study a subject in-depth over a school year as we work to integrate literacy, social studies, science, history, art, music, and math as much as possible. Each classroom uses guiding questions to lead children to their own discoveries through an inquiry approach to learning.

Here are some of the questions we ask ourselves in Kindergarten:

  • What makes a bird a bird?  Why is a robin a robin?  Why isn’t a robin an eagle?
  • How do birds survive? How do birds die?
  • Why protect birds? How do humans affect birds? How do birds affect humans? How do birds fit into our world?
  • Where do birds come from?  Where do birds go?
  • How do birds change/grow?

We have two classrooms of kindergarten students and we rely heavily on parent volunteers and resources/experts in the community to support our efforts in providing a rich and powerful curriculum. Thank you Bird by Bird! We are so excited to be a part of this effort to bring awareness to our natural world.
