This year has flown by! It seems like about a month ago that I was putting the feeders up in the trees. This semester I have witnessed something I never thougt I would ever see. Especially in Kuna or Idaho. I mentioned last month about the book we have been reading this semester, "The Genius of Birds" by Jennifer Ackerman. If you haven't read this book I highly recommend it. There are so many fasinating stories about bird behavior in it that it is impossible to read it and not be completely wowed and amazed with birds and their ability to problem solve. The species most dominately covered is the Crow. Crows are extremely intelligent. If you have lived in Idaho very long you have probably noticed that Crows, Magpies and Ravens are tormented and killed in large numbers. When I did the post-questionare for the seniors that were leaving I was amazed by the answer for the question, "what is you favorite bird?". Several wrote crow as their favorite bird because they are so smart. I have always talked about how intelligent the birds are in the Crow family but the stories that Jennifer Akerman tells in the book just have a way of grabbing ahold of you and not letting go. It is a quick read so if you want to add it to you summer reading I have a few copies and I would be happy to loan you a copy. Have a great summer.
